In the middle of a conversation with my sister Paula she told me that Mum had been in WAAF during WWII, something I was previously unaware of.
I sent off a record request to the MOD and sure enough the records were found.
The “mystery” of how Mum and Dad met has also been solved since her unit was 13 OTU which is where Dad converted to Mitchell’s before being posted to his squadron. They have would been at RAF Finmere since Bicester (the posting) had grass runways and could not support the Mitchell’s weight on landing.
I then applied to the MOD Medal Office for her War Medal and Defense medal
Sadly although she served more than 3 years the cut off date for the Defense medal meant that shed had 1077 days of qualifying service – 3 days short! Still coming from an RAF family you learn that the rules are the rules
