It all began with a loft conversion, clearing the eaves I found the box of slides I’d kept since Dad passed away in 2006. If I didn’t scan them I wasn’t sure anyone else would. It was worth the considerable effort and led to the realisation that I really knew little about what he did.
Like many he did not really speak about WWII and I regretfully didn’t ask. It has been an education and something of an emotional rollercoaster discovering his service history and much more about the war. A chance question to my elder sister also led to the discovery that Mum also served in WW2.
The war effort was pervasive on a massive scale and many made the ultimate sacrifice.
How much would I give for one last walk with them? A lot
